Gallery Invitation   September, 1981

102 (One Zero Base Two) was a solo exhibition held at the "Public Gallery" in Halifax, NS from October 19 to November 14, 1981.

My deep appreciation to gallery owner, Ramona Macdonald, for hosting the show.

The installation consisted of 10 "A" pieces and 10 "B" pieces.

"A" pieces   Wash drawings of unambiguous geometric shapes

"B" pieces   Line drawings of ambiguous geometric shapes

For installation, each piece was sandwiched between a sheet of glass and backing board, and held together with metal mounting clips.

The Public Gallery was a long, rectangular shaped room that I divided in half (lengthwise) by placing a line along the middle of the floor using white masking tape.

All the "A" pieces were mounted on one side of the gallery, and all the "B" pieces were mounted directly opposite, on the other side.

One half of the gallery became the "unambiguous" side, while the other half became the "ambiguous" side. Would gallery visitors gravitate to one side more than the other?

One fantasy was to track and record which part of the room people tended to spend more time in. Never happened.

Unambiguous vs Ambiguous   CG Image: August, 2023

At the time, I was beginning to explore computers and coding, so binary numbers held a fascination for me.

102 seemed the perfect title for a show featuring works displayed in 2 arrays of 10.
